Writers’ Guidelines

Notes in the Margin is currently accepting submissions of articles and reviews of interest to freelance writers and editors and the folks who use their services.

Please read through some previously published articles in the article directory before submitting articles or pitching ideas. When submitting or pitching, please indicate which section you feel is most appropriate for your piece.

All articles should be submitted as e-mail attachments in MS Word or Rich Text Format following these requirements: 12-point Courier or Times New Roman font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins. Please use a double-return to separate paragraphs. Do not indent the first line of each paragraph.

  • Feature Articles – 600 to 800 words, $15
  • Short Articles (tips, humor, “brights”) – 300 to 500 words, $10
  • Reviews – 300 to 500 words, $10

Reprints are accepted provided that the subject material is appropriate to Notes in the Margin’s readership. Please include previous publication information with your submission and follow standard guidelines above. Reprint payment is determined on an individual basis.

Kristen King buys First North American Rights for original work and One-Time Use Rights for reprints, and the right to archive your article indefinitely for all articles. You agree that you will not submit the same article or a very similar article for publication until 30 days after it appears in the Notes in the Margin newsletter.

You further agree that if you reprint this article, you will mention that it first appeared in Notes in the Margin and, if possible, provide a link to this site. Kristen reserves the right to edit your article, including reprints, and bio tastefully and appropriately as she deems necessary for grammar, clarity, and style. You will be contacted regarding any substantive editing.
